Numbers 1-10

It always amazes me how little concrete knowledge most of my kiddos have about number sense.  They might have the number three memorized because of the way it looks but they have no idea what three means.  I like to show my kids lots of examples of how a number can be represented. You never know what might click for some students and what works for others, so I like to use many examples.  I created this song to help kids have a better sense of what each number represents.  I have also made posters that hang in my classroom and I refer back to as the year goes on.  In addition I have other sheets I like to use for kids to see numbers in many ways.  Check out the song and resources below to help get your kids to have a clear meaning of the numbers 1-10.

Math Strategies

 I have been teaching my kinders math strategies and tools they can use to help them add and subtract.  I explained how just like we have reading strategies to helper readers, math strategies can help mathematicians.  I spend a week practicing using each strategy, make sure they know using tally marks only works well for addition problems.  Then I like to mix up problems and have practice adding and subtracting at the same time.  I made a song to help them remember the strategies, made posters to hang on my math board in the classroom, and created practice sheets to work on each strategy.  I also have them play partner games and participate in whole group activities during the weeks I spend on this unit.    My practice sheets and posters can be purchased by clicking on the link below.  I have 16 different sheets and 5 posters included in the set.  The link to the youtube song is also found below!

                                                                                                         

                                                                                                                 
                                           

3 D Shapes CC.K.G.1

To introduce my students to 3-D shapes I like to use the you tube song These are the 3 D Shapes That I Know.  This gives examples of shapes in their environment and begins to teach them the vocabulary words for these shapes.  Then we work as a class to complete the sheet.  I play a video for the specific shape we are on and we look at the pictures of things shaped like that.  Then I call on three different students to pick an object we should draw on our own paper.  This activity usuall takes two 25 minute sessions to complete.  If you click on the document you will get a print out of the two sheets I use, one for each day.  This is the video for the cube, once you play it you will see the links for all the other shapes. 

During the week we also sort pictures of 2 and 3-D shapes, make shapes out of clay and popsicle sticks, and play a guessing bag game of 2 and 3-D shapes.  I would love to hear how you teach shapes in your classroom.

                                                        

          

Christmas Coutdown

I had my kids create a Christmas Countdown. We used a Santa coloring sheet for the top and then made a long beard to write numbers on. Every day they cut a number off of his beard. We are working on recognizing and writing teen numbers. This gave them a little extra practice in a fun way.

Teaching Plus One K.CC.4c

My kids are finally able to identify and know quantities of numbers 0-10. We are moving on to plus one. This is K.CC.4- understand that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one larger. I plan to group my kids together with one a little higher than the other for the following activities.

Students have number cards 0-9. They flip over a card and build the number that is one more on a tens frame with counters.

Students roll a dice and color in the number that is one more.  Click on the link for a free resource to use with this

Students flip a card 0-8 and put that many counters into a cup. Then they roll a wooden cube that I have written 0, +1, +2 on. Then they guess the total number in the cup and next to it. Students dump the cup and count out the counters in and out of the cup to check their answer. They write the

numbers on the sheet.

Learning Numbers 0-10

My students are learning to recognize the value of  and write numbers 0-10.  I developed a sheet for them to practice each number in a variety of ways.  I noticed that some children can identify numbers but they aren't able to produce the amounts, while others might be able to count quantities but do not know number names.  I taught a lesson whole group on how to use this sheet after we spent some time on number sense, forming numbers, and a basic understanding of a tens frame.  This sheet has helped me to determine what concepts different students are struggling with.  It also allows me to meet many common core standards at one time.

Fluently Add Within 5 (K.OA.5)

We have been working on our fact fluency for the past few weeks.  I was trying to come up with a catchy song to practice the facts each day.  I wish I was more musically inclined, here is what I came up with...

                                            

I created timed test that the kids take each week if they pass the zero's then the next week they take the one's test and so on.  When they pass a test they get to color part of their ice cream paper.  We are working towards an ice cream party when we have a at least 80% of the class pass 0-5.  This is a picture of their ice cream papers. They color the spoon for passing the zero's, bowl for one's, ice cream for 2's, and start to add toppings of their choice for 3-5.

                                                    

We also make french fries to practice each week by putting the problems on popsicle sticks. I just used a library pocket to hold the sticks as the fry container.  They take them out and practice their facts every day.

Dr. Seuss (K.RFS.2a)

In celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday we have been doing a special activity at the end of each day.  If students are good all day and keep their stamp they can participate in the 10-15 minute activity.  I read a Dr. Seuss book earlier in the day and then we do the related activity at the end of the day.  Here are a few activities.

I read  The Cat in the Hat and then we came up with a list of rhyming words and made our own hats.

                                          

We read One Fish, Two, Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish and then graphed goldfish crackers.  Here is the worksheet we used to graph on.  It's a freebie on Teacher's Pay Teacher's, click on the link at the bottom of the picture.

We read Green Egg's and Ham and partnered up to play Tic-Tac-Toe.  One person was the green eggs and the other was the ham.  Click on the link for the printable.  This website has lots of cute Dr. Seuss games and activities.

Winter Bulletin Board Ideas

I wanted to do a winter bulletin board to hang out in the hall for a while.  I used a circle punch to cut out lots of white circles.  Then I assigned each student three sight words to write out on the snowmen.  We are going to go out in the hall and count how many sight words we can read/write.

For math we are working on addition so I used a die cut of a Christmas tree and the kids balled up tissue paper for the ornaments.

This was my November bulletin board.  We have been working on short vowel word families, each child was assigned a word family and on each feather they had to write a word from that particular word family.  On the turkey's clothes the word family chunk was written.  We went out in the hall and count how many words we could read and write as a class!

We have been working on teen numbers and different ways to represent and show teen numbers. 

                                        

This teen number flyswatter game has been a favorite of my students.  I have the kids line up in two lines, they like to play girls vs. boys.  I call out a teen number and see who can swat it first.

                                                      

I created this sheet for students to work on showing a teen number in multiple ways, after we completed a lot of practice showing teen numbers on ten's frames, as ten blocks and ones, and counted items. We pick one number and fill out the whole sheet using that teen number.  This is a free download at teachers pay teachers.

                                         

We glued smarties on ten's frames to represent each number 1-20.  I hung this in the hall with the sayings "These smarties know numbers 1-20"
